UGC vs Influencer - What's the Difference (and Which One Should You Be)?
When I first started creating content, I had no idea what to even call myself.
Like…was i an influencer? A UGC creator? Or just “a girl with a ring light making tiktok for brands”? (all technically true btw).
And honestly, brands get confused too.
Sometimes they’ll say “we’re looking for influencers” when they actually want UGC. Or they’ll ask for your socials, but what they really mean is: “show us your follower count and vibe.”
And these terms get thrown around like they’re the same thing…but they’re not.
- Influencers = post to their own audience.
- UGC creators = make content for brands to post on their channels.
Both are valuable. Both get paid. They just play completely different roles.
What is UGC (User-Generated Content)?
UGC is content you create for brands - not your own page. So think TikToks, Reels, or photos they can use on their socials, in ads, or on their website.
It’s not about your following - it’s about creating content that feels native, relatable, and scroll-stopping.
What is an Influencer?
Influencers post to their own audience.
And brands pay them because they want access to that community.
So If you’ve got 1k, 10k, or 100k+ followers who actually trust you? That’s goooold as you’re basically renting out your reach.
Why Brands Use Both
- UGC → “We need ads/content we can control.”
- Influencers → “We need exposure to your audience.”
And sometimes, they want both (aka where you win)
For example: → You film a TikTok for them to use as an ad (UGC). → You also post it on your page for reach (influencer).
Pros & Cons (for Creators)
UGC Pros:
- Don’t need a big audience → brands care about content quality, not followers.
- More control → you decide how you shoot/edit, no algorithm stress.
- Can scale faster → brands often buy in bulk (5, 10, 20 videos at once).
UGC Cons:
- Less personal brand growth (content lives on their page, not yours).
- Negotiation around usage rights can get messy (only if you don’t price it right).
Influencer Pros:
- You build your personal brand + community.
- Passive growth → your audience = your long-term leverage.
- Higher rates per post (reach rent, remember?)
Influencer Cons:
- More pressure on engagement + numbers.
- Algorithm = your boss (and she’s moody).
- Harder to scale if you don’t grow your audience.
So Which Should You Do?
Honestly? If you can, both.
UGC pays the bills but influencing builds your brand long-term.
Buuuut if you’re new, UGC is the fastest way in 😎 (no 10k followers required). And once you grow your audience? Add influencer work into the mix!!
Quick Pitch Tip (because you know I can’t help myself):
If you’re offer both, make it obvious:
“I create UGC that performs in ads and I share influencer-style content with my {number} followers. I also offer whitelisting options so you can run ads through my page.”
That one line? chef’s kiss.
So next time someone asks if you’re an influencer or a UGC creator, just smile and say: “Well… depends on the brand, depends on the deal. Sometimes both.”
Because honestly? You don’t need to pick a box.
You just need to know the difference - so you can pitch smart, charge right, and not undersell yourself.
